About
Haviland Lake Campground is situated on the scenic shore of Haviland Lake within the San Juan National Forest, approximately 18 miles north of Durango, Colorado. At an elevation of 8,705 feet, the campground offers 43 sites shaded by towering ponderosa pines, with many providing direct lake views and easy shoreline access. The Hermosa Cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop across the water. The 80-acre lake operates as a no-wake waterbody, making it ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and peaceful fishing. Anglers can cast for rainbow and brown trout from an accessible fishing dock or the shoreline. The Forebay Lake Trail begins directly in the campground, leading to the smaller Forebay Lake just over a mile to the east. The historic Rico-to-Rockwood Wagon Road, built in the late 1800s, passes through the area. The campground provides potable water, trash service, six vault toilets, fire rings at each site, and picnic tables. Of the 43 sites, 26 are reservable through Recreation.gov and 17 offer electric hookups. Many facilities are universally accessible, including barrier-free camping and an accessible fishing dock. The campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet.
Directions
From Durango, travel north on Highway 550 for 18-19 miles to Haviland Lake Road (FR 671). Turn right (east) and continue about 1 mile across the dam. The campground is on the left.
