About
Hopewell Lake Campground occupies a prime location adjacent to a small, man-made 14-acre lake in the high country of Carson National Forest. At 9,500 feet elevation, the campground sits within a forest of conifer and aspen trees that provides partial shade throughout the camping area. The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow and brook trout, making it a popular destination for shore fishing, fly fishing, and float tube angling. The campground features 29 standard nonelectric sites and two equestrian sites equipped with horse corrals and water troughs. A group shelter accommodates day-use gatherings of up to 100 people, and a group overnight site is available by reservation. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail passes directly through the campground, providing excellent opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. Canoeing on the calm lake waters is a favorite activity, as motorized boats are not permitted. The surrounding high-elevation terrain offers cool summer temperatures and stunning mountain scenery, though the elevation means weather can be unpredictable and visitors should come prepared for afternoon thunderstorms.
Directions
From Taos, New Mexico, take U.S. 64 about 40 miles west. The campground is on the south side of the road.
