About
Cascade Creek Cabin is a hunter-style Forest Service cabin situated at the edge of a second-growth spruce-hemlock forest along a gravel beach near the mouth of Cascade Creek in Thomas Bay. The cabin features a wood stove, oil heater requiring #1 stove oil, two double bunks, two single bunks, a counter, wooden table and benches, a covered porch, and an axe/maul. A pit-type outhouse is provided. Guests must bring their own sleeping bags and pads, cooking gear, food, fire starter, garbage bags, and approximately one gallon of heating oil per day. The Cascade Creek Trail begins near the cabin, offering moderate hiking for the first mile before gaining elevation and becoming more challenging. The trail provides access to waterfalls, a whitewater canyon, and pristine alpine lakes including Falls Lake and Swan Lake, where rowboats with oars are available. The area supports wildlife including deer, moose, mountain goats, and black bears. Fishing opportunities include king salmon, halibut, and crab in front of the cabin and in Thomas Bay. Float plane or boat access is tide-dependent. During summer months, cruise ships frequently anchor near Cascade Creek, increasing trail traffic. Forested slopes behind the cabin rise steeply to Cosmos Peak at 5,000 feet elevation.
Directions
Access by float plane or boat only. Located on the mainland in Thomas Bay, south of Cascade Creek and east of Spray Island. From Petersburg: 14 miles by float plane or 19 miles by boat. Float plane and boat access can only occur at certain tide stages. Refer to USGS topographic map Petersburg D3.
