Southeast Heckman Cabin
The cabin is currently closed through May 11, 2026, with reservations available starting May 12. The dock has been stowed for the winter with no ADA access. Bring your own firewood as it cannot be guaranteed. In fall, winter, and early spring, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake conditions preventing float plane landings.

About
Southeast Heckman Cabin sits in a clearing on the southeast shore of Heckman Lake, backed by old-growth Sitka spruce and western hemlock. Built in 1997, this 16x22-foot pan-abode log cabin is one of two Forest Service cabins on Heckman Lake and offers solitude and scenic views across the water to densely forested slopes. The cabin sleeps up to 8 people with two single bunks, two double bunks, and one additional single bunk. Amenities include a wood stove for heat, cooking counter, table and benches, shelves, cupboard space, and an outhouse. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars and dock are provided for exploring the lake. While the cabin is not directly accessible via the Naha River trail, the trail can be reached by paddling the skiff. This is a primitive backcountry cabin with no electricity, indoor plumbing, cell coverage, or potable water. Visitors must bring drinking water or treat lake water, along with sleeping bags, cooking gear, lanterns, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, life jackets, and firewood. The area offers excellent fishing for steelhead, salmon, trout, and Dolly Varden, with wildlife including Sitka black-tailed deer, black bear, marten, mink, beaver, and wolf.
Directions
Access is by float plane only, approximately 15 air miles from Ketchikan. The cabin is located on the southeast shore of Heckman Lake, about a half mile across from the inlet of the Naha River within the Naha Recreation Area. Refer to USGS map Ketchikan C-5.
