About
Onegume Campground is situated on Little Cut Foot Sioux Lake in the heart of Chippewa National Forest, near Highway 46 (Avenue of the Pines Scenic Byway). The campground name derives from the Ojibwe word "Onigamiing" (pronounced "ah-ni-gah-mig[k]"), meaning "Portage," reflecting its location on a historic portage route along a continental divide. Established in 1967, it has become one of the most popular campgrounds in the forest. The campground offers 48 electric campsites nestled in a scenic forest of birch and red pine trees, with 11 premium sites located directly on the lakefront. All sites provide 30-amp electrical hookups. An accessible fishing dock and fish cleaning station serve anglers targeting the area's exceptional fisheries. Little Cut Foot Sioux Lake provides direct access to Lake Winnibigoshish, one of Minnesota's premier fishing destinations known for trophy walleye, perch, and muskie. The lake is especially popular during Minnesota's fishing season opener. Beyond fishing, the area offers miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and birding. The Simpson Creek Trail and Cut Foot Sioux National Recreation Trail are accessible nearby. The lake supports diverse wildlife including loons, osprey, and bald eagles. The Cut Foot Sioux Visitor Information Center, located just north of the campground, features interpretive displays and educational programs accessible via a half-mile trail.
