About
Wildrose Campground is a free, first-come, first-served campground located high in the Panamint Mountains of Death Valley National Park at 4,100 feet elevation. The campground offers 23 sites on dirt and gravel surfaces surrounded by mesquite bushes and rolling hills. This higher elevation location provides welcome relief from Death Valley's extreme heat, typically running about 15 degrees cooler than Furnace Creek. The campground serves as a base for exploring the area's attractions, including the historic Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, beehive-shaped stone structures dating back to the 1870s, located just two miles beyond the campground on a road accessible by passenger cars. The Wildrose Peak Trail, an 8-mile round-trip hike offering sweeping park views, begins nearby. Visitors with high-clearance vehicles can continue up the mountain to Thorndike and Mahogany Flat campgrounds at even higher elevations. Campers must bring all their own water, as none is available on-site. The nearest water source is approximately 31 miles north at Stovepipe Wells. The area is known for high winds, and the steep, winding Emigrant Canyon Road has a 25-foot vehicle length restriction. Generator use is permitted from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
Directions
From CA-190, take Emigrant Canyon Road into the Panamint Mountains. The campground is located along Emigrant Canyon Road at 4,100 feet elevation. Vehicles over 25 feet in length are prohibited. Check road conditions before traveling, especially during and after storms.
