Mahogany Flat Primitive Campground

Closed — Closed for winter due to snow and ice at 8,200 feet elevation. The campground typically reopens in late spring when conditions improve. High-clearance or 4x4 vehicles required for access.

About

Mahogany Flat Primitive Campground sits at 8,200 feet elevation in a Pinyon Pine and Juniper forest within Death Valley National Park, offering dramatic views down into the valley and access to the Telescope Peak trailhead. This free, first-come, first-served campground features 9 primitive sites that can accommodate RVs up to 25 feet and trailers up to 12 feet, though the winding dirt access road requires high-clearance vehicles and often 4x4, especially after storms. Low-hanging tree branches may be present along the route. Due to its high elevation, temperatures here are typically 30-35 degrees cooler than the valley floor, making it a popular escape during hot summer months. However, the campground is frequently closed in winter and early spring due to snow and ice conditions. Campers must be self-sufficient as there is no water available on-site; the closest water source is approximately 30 miles north at Emigrant Rest Area. Facilities are minimal, befitting a primitive campground. Vault toilets are available seasonally, and each site includes an NPS fire grate and likely a picnic table. Fire restrictions apply from June 15 to September 15, prohibiting open flames but allowing controlled flame devices with shut-off valves. No firewood gathering is permitted; bring your own wood. All food, garbage, and cooking equipment must be sealed in vehicles or solid containers when unattended. The campground operates under standard Death Valley regulations: quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM, maximum 30-day stay, and checkout by noon.

Directions

Access Mahogany Flat Campground via Emigrant Canyon Road off CA Hwy 190. The final stretch is a steep, unpaved road requiring high-clearance vehicles; 4x4 may be necessary. Low-hanging tree branches and steep inclines are common along this route.
