About

Located deep within the 32,000-acre Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest, Wildcow Primitive Group Camp provides a true backcountry camping experience in one of Florida's largest remaining freshwater wetland ecosystems. The camp sits at the remote terminus of Wild Cow Grade, accessible via a network of forest roads that wind through pine flatwoods, cypress strands, and wet prairies that drain into the Okaloacoochee Slough. The site features an elevated tent platform to keep campers above potentially soggy ground, a picnic table, and a fire ring with grill for cooking. As a primitive camp, there is no potable water or electricity, so campers must be fully self-sufficient. The surrounding forest offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing, and seasonal hunting. The area is known for its population of Florida panthers, black bears, and wading birds. This group site accommodates up to 10 people and requires advance reservations through Reserve America. Bear-proof food storage is required, and campers should be prepared for mosquitoes and potential wet conditions, particularly during summer months when flooding can occur.
