About

Okaloacoochee Slough Hunt Camp is situated within Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest in western Hendry and northeastern Collier counties, approximately 30 miles east of Fort Myers. This primitive campground features 6 campsites designed for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts seeking an authentic backcountry experience. Five sites accommodate RVs or tents while one is tent-only, with maximum equipment lengths of 40 feet. The campground has no electric hookups or potable water facilities, though non-potable water is available via a pump and port-o-pots are provided during hunting season. Each site includes a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. The forest's namesake, the Okaloacoochee Slough, is a 32,370-acre pristine wetland system oriented north-south through the forest, providing critical water supply to the Fakahatchee Strand and Big Cypress Preserve. Recreational opportunities abound with fishing in numerous canals, ponds, and ditches accessible by vehicle or via hikes to isolated spots. Miles of open forest roads provide excellent hiking and bicycling routes, while the forest's wetlands offer exceptional wildlife viewing. The area is one of the few places in South Florida north of the Everglades where the pre-Columbian landscape remains observable. Small, high-quality hunts are scheduled on weekends in late summer and fall, with spring turkey hunts also available.
