Washington Creek Campground

Open

The park is open for the 2026 season (April 16 through October 31). Early season conditions apply: scattered snowbanks and ice remain, and many Windigo facilities including the visitor center, store, potable water, showers, laundry, and trash disposal are not yet operational. Campers should use Washington Creek Campground outhouses and bring adequate drinking water and supplies. Wolf activity is high on both ends of the island. Individual sites are first-come, first-served; group sites require advance reservation.

About

Washington Creek Campground sits along Washington Creek near Windigo on Isle Royale's southwest end. This remote backcountry campground is accessible only by foot, canoe, kayak, or private boat, with Windigo Dock located 0.3 miles away. The campground offers 10 shelters and 15 individual tent sites available first-come, first-served, plus 4 group tent sites that require advance reservations through the park. The Windigo Visitor Center, Washington Harbor Store, and Windigo Comfort Station are all accessible from the campground. Seasonal amenities at Windigo include flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, laundry facilities, potable water, fuel, and a pump-out station. The campground has outhouses and food storage lockers. Campfires are not permitted; only self-contained camp stoves are allowed. Isle Royale is a true wilderness experience. Campers should be prepared to collect, filter, and treat their own drinking water when seasonal facilities are not operating. A free overnight permit is required for small parties of 6 or fewer, while groups of 7-10 must reserve group sites in advance for $25 per permit. A 3-night consecutive stay limit applies from June 1 through September 17.
