Beaver Island Campground

Closed — Closed for the winter season. Isle Royale National Park reopens April 16, 2026. The campground operates first-come, first-served with a 3-night maximum stay from June 1 through Labor Day.

About

Beaver Island Campground sits on Beaver Island in the center of Washington Harbor, near the Windigo ranger station on the west end of Isle Royale National Park. This remote wilderness campground is accessible only by canoe, kayak, or private boat, with no vehicle access to the island. All three shelters face the water, providing scenic harbor views. The campground features a dock where boats can be secured overnight, with normal water depths ranging from 2 to 5 feet. As a backcountry campground in Isle Royale National Park, visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for changing Lake Superior weather conditions. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. A free overnight camping permit is required. From June 1 through Labor Day, there is a 3-night maximum stay limit to ensure access for other visitors during peak season. Facilities are minimal and consist of seasonal composting toilets and non-potable water. Only self-contained stoves are permitted; ground fires are not allowed. All park visitors must follow food storage guidelines to reduce human-wildlife interactions, particularly with wolves. Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. EDT (9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. CDT). Pets are not allowed anywhere in Isle Royale National Park.
