About

Feldtmann Lake Campground sits on the peaceful shores of Feldtmann Lake in the remote southwestern section of Isle Royale National Park, one of the most isolated wilderness areas in the National Park System. Accessible only by foot via the Feldtmann Lake Trail or Feldtmann Ridge Trail, this inland backcountry campground offers a true wilderness experience far from the busy harbors on the island's east end. The campground features 7 total sites including 5 first-come, first-served individual tent sites and 2 group sites that must be reserved in advance for parties of 7 or more. The campground provides seasonal composting toilets and non-potable water that must be treated before consumption. All cooking must be done on self-contained stoves, as campfires are not permitted. The terrain throughout the campground is uneven and rough, and facilities are not accessible. Due to new food storage guidelines implemented to reduce human-wildlife interactions with wolves, all food and garbage must be stored properly. A stay limit of 2 nights applies from June 1 through Labor Day. Isle Royale's location in the middle of Lake Superior means visitors must be prepared for unpredictable weather conditions at any time. The park operates seasonally, typically opening in mid-April and closing in the fall. All visitors need a free overnight camping permit for small parties of 6 or less, while groups of 7 or more must pay a $25 group permit fee and submit requests through the park's online system. Michigan fishing regulations apply to inland waters, and only barbless hooks with artificial lures and flies are permitted.
