About

Located in Siskiwit Bay on the remote southwest end of Isle Royale National Park, this backcountry campground serves as a primitive basecamp for hikers and paddlers exploring one of Michigan's most isolated wilderness areas. The campground is accessible by foot via the Island Mine and Feldtmann Ridge Trails, or by canoe, kayak, or private boat. Two shelters provide basic weather protection, and boats can overnight at the dock with a normal depth of 2 to 6 feet. This is a backcountry campground with minimal amenities. Non-potable water is available, and seasonal composting toilets serve campers. Food storage lockers are provided to reduce human-wildlife interactions, particularly with the island's wolf population. All park visitors must pay an entrance fee, and a free overnight permit is required for small parties. Groups of 7 or more must reserve group tent sites in advance for $25 per permit. A 3-night stay limit applies from June 1 through Labor Day. Fires are only allowed in the community fire ring; otherwise, self-contained stoves must be used. Pets are not permitted on the island. Quiet hours run from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. EDT or 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. CDT. Isle Royale's remote location in Lake Superior means visitors must be prepared for unpredictable weather conditions and bring adequate supplies, as mainland services are not available.
