About
Grace Island Campground occupies a small island just outside Washington Harbor on the southwest end of Isle Royale National Park, one of the most remote wilderness areas in the National Park System. Accessible only by canoe, kayak, or private boat, this primitive campground features 2 shelters available on a first-come, first-served basis. Boats can dock overnight at the island, with typical water depths of 2-4 feet under normal conditions. The campground operates seasonally as part of Isle Royale's backcountry camping system, with a maximum stay limit of 3 nights from June 1 through Labor Day. All visitors must obtain a free overnight camping permit. Facilities are minimal and reflect the park's wilderness character: composting toilets are available seasonally, and non-potable water is accessible. Visitors must use self-contained stoves only, as ground fires are prohibited. The terrain throughout the campground is rough and uneven, and facilities are not accessible. Isle Royale's location in the middle of Lake Superior means weather can be highly unpredictable, and visitors should prepare for any conditions. The park enforces quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. EDT (9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. CDT). Pets are not allowed anywhere in the park. New food storage guidelines are in effect parkwide to reduce human-wildlife interactions, particularly with wolves.
