About
The Gate Campground occupies a scenic location within the geologic formation known as The Gate, where the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River has carved a distinctive notch through the surrounding rocks. Managed by the BLM Gunnison Field Office, this intimate 8-site campground provides convenient access to the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway and some of Colorado's premier trout fishing waters.
The campground serves as an excellent base for anglers pursuing the Lake Fork's brown and rainbow trout populations, with direct river access from most sites. The surrounding area offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and exploring the dramatic canyon landscape. The campground's location approximately 16 miles north of Lake City places it midway between Lake City and Blue Mesa Reservoir, making it a convenient stopover along Highway 149.
Facilities are basic but functional, with two vault toilets and a hand pump providing potable water during the operating season. All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The short gravel access road off Highway 149 leads down to the riverside camping area, where most of the 8 sites offer proximity to the rushing waters of the Lake Fork.
Directions
From Lake City, head north on Highway 149 for approximately 15.3 miles. Look for the campground entrance sign on the left side of the highway. A short gravel driveway leads down to the campground. From Gunnison, drive 9 miles west on Highway 50, turn left on Highway 149, and travel approximately 28 miles. The campground will be on the right.
