About

Low Gap Camp is a dispersed camping area situated high on a ridge in the northern section of Cherokee National Forest in Sullivan County, Tennessee. This primitive destination offers several cleared campsites scattered along the ridge road, some featuring picnic tables, though campers should arrive fully self-sufficient. The rough access road requires a vehicle with decent ground clearance, which helps maintain the area's peaceful, uncrowded character. As dispersed camping on National Forest land, there are no developed facilities such as toilets, trash service, or potable water. A spring with water is reportedly located approximately a quarter mile west on the mountain road. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash. The 14-day camping limit applies, after which campers must relocate for at least 7 days before returning. The main draw for visitors is the extensive network of hiking and biking trails traversing the surrounding Cherokee National Forest, offering excellent opportunities for backcountry exploration in the Southern Appalachians. The remote setting provides genuine solitude for experienced campers seeking a true wilderness experience.

Directions

Access via Forest Service Road 221 from Highway 64. The gravel road is approximately 8 miles to the camping area. High-clearance vehicle recommended, especially after rain.
