About

Tajique Campground is a small, primitive camping area located in the Manzano Mountains within the Mountainair Ranger District of Cibola National Forest. Situated at 6,800 feet elevation near Tajique Creek, this free campground offers 6 sites designed for cars, trucks, vans, and small RVs only. The access road is narrow and not suitable for trailers or larger recreational vehicles. Despite its limited amenities, Tajique is valued for its cool mountain setting and proximity to natural attractions. The campground is located near the head of Tajique Canyon, home to the largest stand of Rocky Mountain bigtooth maples in New Mexico. Picnic tables are provided at each site, and vault toilets are available, though campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. The campground is accessed via 5 miles west of the community of Tajique on NM Highway 55 and Forest Road 55. Visitors should be prepared for reduced services, including potential lack of trash service. The remote location and basic facilities make this an ideal spot for experienced campers seeking a quiet, no-frills mountain camping experience.
