About

Capilla Peak Campground is a popular high-elevation destination in the Cibola National Forest, perched at 9,200 feet in the Manzano Mountains. The campground offers exceptional panoramic views of the Manzano Mountain Wilderness, Rio Grande Valley, and Estancia Valley. With only 8 camping units, this intimate campground features unique camping structures that provide some shelter in this exposed mountain setting. The campground serves as an access point to the Manzano Mountain Wilderness and is located near Hawkwatch's raptor counting station, making it ideal for wilderness enthusiasts and birders. The location provides direct access to hiking trails including the North Crest Trail system. Due to the high elevation and exposed nature of all campsites, visitors should be prepared for variable weather conditions including sudden storms, high winds, and cooler temperatures even in summer. Access to the campground is via Forest Road 245, which requires high clearance vehicles and is not suitable for large RVs or trailers. The campground operates as a mix of first-come, first-served and reservable sites. A separate group picnic pavilion is available for day use and can be reserved through Recreation.gov. Winter road closures typically occur to protect the forest road from damage during wet and snowy conditions.

Directions

From Manzano, travel west 12 miles via NM Highway 55 and Forest Road 245. High clearance vehicle recommended.
