About

Sunset Campground is a developed campground with 54 sites located on Lake Pillsbury in the Mendocino National Forest. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill or stove. The campground is situated directly across from a nature trail and near a motorized boat launch ramp, making it popular for fishing, swimming, and water sports on Lake Pillsbury, the largest lake in the forest. The campground is operated and maintained by Pacific Gas and Electric Company under special use permit from the Forest Service. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The campground can accommodate RVs and trailers, with some sites able to handle larger rigs. Vault toilets are provided, though potable water availability has varied in recent seasons. Access requires driving on County Road 240 (Potter Valley-Lake Pillsbury Road), a gravel road that winds through the forest. The remote location offers a quieter camping experience compared to more developed campgrounds. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and camping is only permitted in designated campgrounds within the Lake Pillsbury basin.
