Special Weather Statement issued May 2 at 1:45PM EDT by NWS Upton NY
The combination of drying fine fuels, northwest wind gusts between 25 and 30 mph, and relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread Sunday afternoon for the Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island. This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions and has been developed in coordination with state fire and land management officials. As a reminder, the annual statewide burn ban remains in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources such as machinery or matches and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose of cigarette butts. Please refer to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for more information on burn restrictions.
About
Sunken Meadow State Park spans diverse coastal and upland terrain along the Long Island Sound, offering some of the most scenic views on Long Island with Connecticut visible across the water. The park's topography ranges from three miles of sandy beach and tidal flats to glacier-formed bluffs and heavily wooded rolling hills. Three bridges cross Sunken Meadow Creek as it flows from the park interior to the mouth of the Nissequogue River. As one of Long Island's most popular day-use parks, Sunken Meadow hosts millions of visitors annually for family picnics, swimming in the calm Sound waters, and measured walks along the three-quarter mile boardwalk. The eastern portion of the park provides launching access for kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, and windsurfing. Athletic facilities include ball fields, open lawn areas, and cross-country running courses. The park serves as the northern terminus of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail and offers additional nature trails through varied habitats. The park's 27-hole golf complex, designed by Alfred H. Tull, takes advantage of the hilly, wooded terrain and offers expansive views of Long Island Sound from the driving range. This is primarily a day-use park without traditional camping facilities, operating from sunrise to sunset year-round.
