About

Sugarite Canyon State Park spans 3,600 acres at the intersection of the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, featuring dramatic canyon scenery, two stocked lakes, and remnants of an early 20th-century coal mining camp. The park offers 48 developed campsites across multiple loops: Lake Alice provides full hookup and electric/water sites ideal for RVs up to 70 feet, while Soda Pocket offers more primitive tent camping. Amenities include modern restrooms with showers, vault toilets, a dump station, and a visitor center with exhibits and a gift shop. Recreational opportunities abound with fishing and non-motorized boating on Lake Alice and Lake Maloya, over 14 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails including the scenic Lake-to-Lake trail, and horseback riding. The park's diverse ecosystems support abundant wildlife, butterflies, and wildflowers. Winter visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions permit. The campground operates year-round with peak season from May through September when reservations are recommended. Off-season camping from October through April operates on a first-come, first-served basis with reduced services.
