About
Blue Lake Campground is a developed first-come, first-served campground located at 10,500 feet elevation in the scenic San Isabel National Forest. Views of the nearby Culebra Range Mountains surrounded by aspen and spruce forests create an authentic Colorado camping experience. A tributary of the Cuchara River flows through the campground, providing water access and ambiance. Blue Lake is a half-mile from the campground and Bear Lake is one mile away. Both small lakes are stocked several times during the summer, providing good fishing opportunities. A three-quarter-mile nonmotorized trail connects Bear Lake and Blue Lake for hikers and equestrians. For more adventurous exploration, Forest System Road 436, a rough jeep road across from the campground, leads 1.5 miles to the North Fork Trail and continues approximately 500 vertical feet below Trinchera Peak summit, where bighorn sheep are frequently observed. The campground provides access to the Indian Trail trailhead at Bear Lake Campground, one mile up Forest System Road 422. This multiuser trailhead offers 23 miles of motorized trails for ATVs, motorcycles, bicycles, horses, and foot traffic. The mountain town of Cuchara is nearby for shopping and visitor information, while La Veta offers grocery stores, gas stations, and additional services. The Spanish Peaks Wilderness, 14 miles from the campground, is a popular hiking destination. Bear encounters are common, and visitors must store all food and attractants in bear-resistant containers, bear bags, bear boxes, or inside hard-sided vehicles.

From La Veta, travel south on State Highway 12 for 13 miles to Forest System Road 422. Turn right onto Forest System Road 422 and follow it for 4 miles to the campground.
