About

Blue Lake Campground is a high-elevation destination at 10,500 feet in the San Isabel National Forest, surrounded by views of the Culebra Range and mixed aspen and spruce forests. A tributary of the Cuchara River flows through the campground, and nearby Blue Lake (half mile) and Bear Lake (one mile) are stocked multiple times during summer for good fishing opportunities. The campground offers 16 standard non-electric sites with vault toilets, potable water from a hand pump, fire rings with pedestal grills, and picnic tables at each site. Maximum RV length is 40 feet. A well-marked trail system connects Bear Lake and Blue Lake, open to both foot and horse traffic. Across from the campground, FSR 436 provides rough jeep road access to Trinchera Peak where bighorn sheep are frequently spotted. Important: A high wind storm in 2022 blew down most trees at the campground, leaving it largely treeless and exposed to wind. Bears are common in the area; all food and attractants must be stored in a bear-resistant manner. The nearby town of Cuchara offers shopping and visitor information, while La Veta has grocery stores and gas stations.

Directions

From La Veta, drive south on Highway 12 for 13 miles to FSR 422. Turn right onto FSR 422 and follow it for 4 miles to Blue Lake Campground.
