About

Bear Lake Campground is a scenic high-elevation destination in the San Isabel National Forest, perched at 10,480 feet with stunning views of the Culebra Range Mountains. The campground features 14 sites nestled among aspen and spruce forests, each equipped with a fire ring, pedestal grill, and picnic table. A tributary of the Cuchara River flows through the campground, adding to its natural appeal. Fishing is a primary draw here. Bear Lake lies just 1/8 mile from the campground, while Blue Lake is one mile away. Both small lakes are stocked multiple times during summer, offering good fishing opportunities. For those seeking trail access, Indian Trail #1300 begins at the north end of the campground, connecting to a 23-mile multi-use system open to ATVs, motorcycles, bicycles, horses, and hikers. A quieter trail network between Bear Lake and Blue Lake is reserved for foot and horse traffic only. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with potable water available via hand pump and two accessible vault toilets. Firewood is sold on-site. Due to the high elevation and mountain exposure, the area can experience very windy conditions. The nearby town of Cuchara offers shopping, while La Veta has a grocery store and gas stations.

Directions

From La Veta, drive south on State Highway 12 for 15 miles to Forest Service Road 422. Turn right onto FSR 422 and follow it for 5 miles to reach Bear Lake Campground, located one mile past Blue Lake Campground.
