About

Storm King Campground is a small, rustic camping area situated at 9,498 feet elevation at the base of Storm King Mountain in the La Garita mountain range. The campground lies in an aspen glen amidst rolling and rocky hills on the Middle Fork of Carnero Creek, offering a peaceful mountain setting with light visitor usage. The facility features 6 first-come, first-served campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, plus 2 picnic sites. A vault toilet is available, but there is no drinking water on site, so campers must bring their own or purify stream water from nearby Carnero Creek. Access to Storm King requires a drive on graveled Forest Road 690 (County Road 41G), either 14 miles from Highway 114 via Carnero Pass from Saguache, or 14.5 miles northwest from Monte Vista via the La Garita turnoff. The campground operates as a pack-in, pack-out facility with no trash service, and firewood is limited. Maximum trailer length is 25 feet due to limited parking. The area offers opportunities for fishing in Carnero Creek and nearby streams, mountain biking on forest roads, and 4WD exploration on forest roads 685 and 684. No horses or livestock are allowed within the fenced campground area. Dogs must be leashed with a maximum 6-foot leash. The nearby Carnero Guard Station cabin is available for rent at $50 per night through Recreation.gov for those seeking a more sheltered overnight option.

Directions

From Saguache: Take CO Highway 114 west 14.5 miles to County Road 41G, then follow Forest Road 690 (CR 41G) over Carnero Pass for 14 miles to the campground. From Monte Vista: From U.S. Highway 285, take the La Garita turnoff (County Road G) west 6 miles. At the fork, take the graveled Carnero Creek Road (FR 690/CR 41G) northwest 14.5 miles to the campground.
