About
Storm King Campground is a small, primitive Forest Service campground located in Rio Grande National Forest's Saguache Ranger District. Situated at the base of Storm King Mountain (elevation 10,849 feet), the campground lies in a scenic aspen grove amidst rolling, rocky hills on the Middle Fork of Carnero Creek. The campground offers 6 campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water on site. Campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash, as no refuse receptacles are provided. Firewood is limited in the area. Recreational opportunities include fishing in area streams and mountain biking on forest roads. 4WD forest roads 685 and 684 are nearby for backcountry exploration. The adjacent Storm King Picnic Site and the Carnero Guard Station cabin (reservable via Recreation.gov) are also in the area.
Directions
From Saguache: Take CO Highway 114 west 14.5 miles to County Road 41G, then follow Forest Road 690 (CR 41G) over Carnero Pass. The campground is 14 miles from Highway 114. From Monte Vista: From US Highway 285, take the La Garita turnoff (County Road G) and follow the paved road 6.0 miles west. At the fork, take graveled Carnero Creek Road (FR 690/CR 41G) 14.5 miles northwest to the campground.
