Stevens Creek Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. Reopens in late May with seasonal water service available late May to mid-September. Vault toilets remain accessible year-round.

About

Stevens Creek Campground lies on the north shore at the eastern end of Blue Mesa Reservoir within Curecanti National Recreation Area, making it the closest campground to Gunnison. The 53-site campground sits at 7,540 feet elevation in a treeless, semi-arid shrubland characterized by sagebrush and rabbitbrush. The bright, sunny setting offers direct access to the reservoir and accommodates everything from tents to large RVs up to 55 feet. The campground is popular with boaters, stand-up paddleboarders, canoeists, and anglers. Bird watching is particularly rewarding here, as the shallower eastern end of the reservoir attracts abundant waterfowl. The 1.5-mile Neversink Trail meanders along the Gunnison River upstream of the reservoir. The boat ramp provides access to Blue Mesa Reservoir during the peak season, though watercraft must be inspected for invasive mussels before launching. Stevens Creek operates as a Scan & Pay campground using the Recreation.gov app. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. The facility includes vault toilets year-round, seasonal drinking water from late May to mid-September, fire grates at each site, and a picnic area. The campground sits in a semi-arid environment receiving less than 12 inches of rain annually. Summer temperatures range from 50 to 90°F during the day and 40 to 60°F at night, with afternoon thunderstorms and strong winds common. The nearby town of Gunnison offers dining, shopping, and access to additional recreation like mountain biking at Hartman Rocks.
