About

Soap Creek Corral / Coal Mesa Horse Camp is a dispersed camping area with horse corrals located in the Gunnison National Forest at approximately 9,000 feet elevation. Situated adjacent to Soap Creek Campground, this lightly-used facility caters specifically to horseback riders seeking access to the West Elk Wilderness. The site serves as a staging area for equestrian adventures, with the Coal Mesa Trailhead on-site providing access to a network of trails including Coal Mesa Trail (451.2) and connecting trails 451 and 452 into the wilderness. The area offers views of granite outcroppings and wildflower-filled meadows during summer months. This is a primitive dispersed camping area with no fee and no reservations. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own water supply. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
