Springtime Campground is a small, primitive campground located on the southeast edge of the Apache Kid Wilderness in the San Mateo Mountains of Cibola National Forest. The campground features 6 individual campsites, each equipped with Adirondack-style shelters designed for campers to roll out sleeping bags on the ground. These simple shelters provide basic protection from the elements while maintaining a backcountry camping experience. The campground serves as an excellent staging area for wilderness exploration, providing direct access to the Apache Kid Wilderness and trails leading to San Mateo Peak Lookout. The area is popular with equestrians, hikers, and hunters. Despite its primitive nature and remote location accessed via Forest Road 225, the campground offers developed amenities including picnic tables and fire pits at each site. No potable water or restrooms are available, requiring visitors to be self-sufficient. This free campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. The remote location 12 miles south of I-25 exit 115 via NM-1 and FR-225 ensures a peaceful, uncrowded camping experience in the rugged mountains of Socorro County.
