About
Springtime Campground sits in the rugged San Mateo Mountains within the Magdalena Ranger District of Cibola National Forest. The campground features six sites, each equipped with an Adirondack-style shelter designed for campers seeking a minimalist experience. These three-sided wooden structures offer basic weather protection while maintaining a close connection to the surrounding wilderness. The campground serves as a popular staging area for adventures into the Apache Kid Wilderness and hikes to San Mateo Peak Lookout. Horse camping is welcome, making this an ideal base for backcountry horseback trips. The area sees the best conditions from late spring through early fall when access roads are most reliable. Facilities are minimal. There is one pit toilet but no potable water, so campers must pack in all drinking water. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required. Access is via a 12-mile drive south from I-25 on forest roads.
Directions
12 miles south of I-25 exit #115 via NM 1 and FR 225.
