About

Luna Park Campground is a small, rustic camping area in the San Mateo Mountains of Cibola National Forest, managed by the Magdalena Ranger District. Named for its distinctive volcanic rock formations that create a moon-like landscape, the campground offers three developed campsites in a remote setting about 8 miles northeast of Monticello, New Mexico. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system or fees. At an elevation of approximately 2,100 feet, the area provides limited shade and basic amenities. Campers should come prepared to be self-sufficient, as there are no water sources, restrooms, or trash services on-site. Each campsite includes a picnic table and likely a fire pit, though fire restrictions may apply seasonally. Access to Luna Park requires driving on forest roads FR 139 and FR 225, which may be challenging for some vehicles and can be impassable during winter weather or monsoon season. The remote location offers solitude and unique geological features for those seeking a primitive camping experience in southern New Mexico.

Directions

From Monticello, NM, drive approximately 8 miles northeast via Forest Roads 139 and 225. Roads may require high clearance vehicles and can be impassable during wet or winter conditions.
