About

Monument Park Cabin is a historic rental structure situated in the Black Range Ranger District of Gila National Forest in Sierra County, New Mexico. Accessed via Forest Road 226 (Chloride Canyon Road), this remote cabin offers a primitive wilderness experience in the high country west of Chloride. The facility maintains light usage levels and provides a base for exploring the surrounding Black Range wilderness. The cabin sits in an area that was impacted by the 2022 Black Fire, which burned over the Chloride Creek headwaters. Heavy monsoon rains following the fire caused significant erosion to Chloride Creek and Forest Road 226. The cabin itself is a historic structure managed by the Forest Service as a rental facility. Given its remote location along a challenging forest road, visitors should be prepared for primitive conditions and difficult access. The area offers solitude and backcountry opportunities in a rugged mountain environment. Toilet facilities at the site are noted as closed, so visitors must be self-sufficient with sanitation needs.

Directions

Located along Forest Road 226 (Chloride Canyon Road) west of Chloride, New Mexico in Sierra County. The road accesses the cabin from the Gila National Forest boundary heading west toward the Monument Cabin area.
