About

Monument Park Cabin is a historic rental cabin managed by the Gila National Forest's Black Range Ranger District. Located at Monument Park along Forest Road 226, the cabin sits in a remote and rugged section of the Black Range, which forms the eastern boundary of the Gila National Forest in Sierra County, New Mexico. The cabin provides a base for exploring the surrounding Aldo Leopold Wilderness and accessing the Continental Divide Trail. The Black Range features elevations ranging from 4,200 feet to over 10,000 feet along the Continental Divide, with dramatic terrain shaped by volcanic activity and erosion. Note: This is a single historic cabin, not a multi-site campground. Forest Road 226 (Chloride Canyon Road) sustained major damage from the 2022 Black Fire and subsequent monsoon flooding, with deep washouts at creek crossings. Check with the Black Range Ranger District for current road and cabin availability before planning a visit.

Directions

From Chloride, NM, travel west on Forest Road 226 (Chloride Canyon Road) approximately 10 miles to Monument Park. The road follows Chloride Creek with numerous creek crossings. High-clearance vehicle recommended. Verify road conditions before travel as this route was severely damaged by flooding.
