Hughes Mill Campground is a small, remote campground located at 8,100 feet elevation in the San Mateo Mountains on the Magdalena Ranger District of Cibola National Forest. The campground features just 2 developed campsites along with dispersed camping opportunities, making it an ideal destination for campers seeking solitude in a high-elevation mountain setting. The campground serves as an important trailhead for the Hughes Mill Trail, a challenging 7-mile route that climbs to Mt. Withington Lookout. The location provides cool mountain temperatures and access to backcountry hiking in the San Mateo Mountains. Access is via US Highway 60 and Forest Road 549, approximately 26 miles southwest of Magdalena. Amenities are minimal at this remote location. Vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own water as no potable water is available on-site. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. The area is managed by the Magdalena Ranger District.
