About
Hughes Mill Campground sits at 8,100 feet in the Magdalena Mountains of Cibola National Forest, offering a primitive camping experience for those willing to venture off the beaten path. With only 2 designated campsites and additional dispersed camping available, this small facility provides solitude that larger campgrounds cannot match. The campground serves as the primary trailhead for the challenging 7-mile hike to Mt. Withington Lookout, making it popular with hikers seeking to summit the highest point in the Cibola National Forest. The Hughes Mill Trail also connects to Forest Road 138, providing a 5.1-mile route open to horseback riding. Facilities are minimal: a vault toilet is available but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The site operates first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted. Access is via US 60 and Forest Road 549, located 26 miles southwest of Magdalena.
