Silver Island Rustic Campground
Open for the 2026 season from May 8 through October 1. First-come, first-served with no fees or reservations. No potable water available; bring your own. Pack out all trash. Quiet hours 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Special Weather Statement issued July 21 at 9:57AM CDT by NWS Duluth MN
Due to continued dry conditions in forested areas and gusty north to northwest winds around 20 to 30 mph today, conditions will remain favorable for near-critical fire weather conditions through this afternoon. This is despite relatively higher minimum RH values expected today at 40 to 50 percent. The situation is evaluated daily by the National Weather Service and the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center. Dry and windy conditions could lead to the rapid spread of fires today. For more information on burning restrictions for Minnesota, see www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html.
About
Silver Island Lake is a large lake in the Superior National Forest offering both an eight-site rustic campground and three backcountry campsites accessible only by boat. The campground sits at the end of Forest Road 921 and provides a quiet, primitive camping experience surrounded by northern Minnesota wilderness. Walleye, northern pike, and panfish attract anglers to these waters. All sites are back-in only and equipped with picnic tables and fire grates. A vault toilet serves the campground while the backcountry sites have wilderness latrines. There is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply or filter lake water. No garbage service is provided; everything must be packed out including fish cleaning remains. The campground has a boat launch with dock and overnight parking for those accessing the backcountry sites. The campground operates seasonally from early May through October and has no fees or reservation system. Each site accommodates a maximum of nine people with space for one vehicle plus one towed trailer. Some sites can fit small RVs under 24 feet. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed at all times and kept contained at night. The access road is not plowed in winter.
