Kawishiwi Lake Rustic Campground

Kawishiwi Lake Rustic Campground sits in a scenic birch stand at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Superior National Forest. This free, primitive campground provides five sites, each equipped with a fire ring and tent pad, along with vault toilet facilities. The gradual slope of the shoreline offers swimming access to the lake. The campground serves as an excellent staging point for paddlers entering or exiting the BWCAW via the Kawishiwi Lake Entry Point. Since the entire lake lies within wilderness boundaries, motors are prohibited. Day-use or overnight permits are required for any lake access and are available at a kiosk at the boat access. Campers should note there is no potable water on site and must pack out all garbage, including fish remains. All five sites can accommodate vehicles over 21 feet, making it accessible for smaller RVs. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Dogs are allowed but must remain on a leash six feet or shorter when outside vehicles or tents.

Directions

From MN 61 in Tofte: Drive north on County Road 2 (Sawbill Trail) about 18 miles. Turn left on County Road 3 (Parent Lake Road). After 8 miles at the county border, Cook County 3 becomes Lake County 7. Follow County Road 7 an additional 2 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road 354 (Kawishiwi Lake Road). The campground is located past the boat access at the end of the road.
