Shumard Canyon Wilderness Campground sits in a remote corner of the Guadalupe Mountains Wilderness, appealing to those drawn to the stark beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert and the unique geology of the Guadalupe range. The 9-mile approach from Pine Springs Trailhead is less vertically demanding than many park trails but offers no shade or tree cover, making proper preparation for sun, wind, and temperature extremes essential. This is true primitive camping with five designated sites and no facilities whatsoever. There is no water source, no toilet, and no trash service. The park requires all overnight wilderness permit holders to carry landfill-safe commercial toilet bag systems (minimum one per person per night) with proof of possession at permit pickup. All trash must be packed out. Campfires are strictly prohibited throughout Guadalupe Mountains National Park; only containerized fuel stoves may be used for cooking. Wilderness Use Permits are required and can be reserved up to three months in advance through Recreation.gov, or obtained as walk-up permits at Pine Springs Visitor Center from 8:00 AM to noon daily (up to 24 hours in advance). Reserved permits must be picked up in person by 3:30 PM Mountain Time, no later than 48 hours before your trip. Pets are not allowed on any trails or in the backcountry.

Directions

Access via Pine Springs Trailhead off U.S. Highway 62/180. The Shumard Canyon trail is approximately 9 miles one-way from the trailhead. The trail is unprotected and exposed with no tree cover.
