About
Tejas Wilderness Campground is a primitive backcountry camping area centrally located within Guadalupe Mountains National Park's wilderness. The campground sits in a densely forested area where tall trees provide deep shade during morning and late afternoon hours and offer protection from the high winds common at elevation. An old ranch-era water tank is located near the sites. The campground is accessible only by foot trail, requiring a minimum 5.5-mile hike from Pine Springs trailhead or 6.2 miles from Dog Canyon, with at least 2,000 feet of elevation gain on rocky terrain. This remoteness rewards backpackers seeking solitude in a high-country forest environment. All campers must obtain a wilderness use permit and carry all drinking water, as none is available at the site. A commercial landfill-safe toilet bag system is mandatory. Campfires are strictly prohibited throughout the park; only containerized fuel stoves may be used for cooking.
Directions
From Pine Springs trailhead, hike 5.5 miles via the Tejas Trail. From Dog Canyon, hike 6.2 miles. Both routes require at least 2,000 feet of elevation gain on rocky terrain.
