Tejas Wilderness Campground

Open — Open year-round. Wilderness Use Permits required for all overnight camping and can be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov or obtained at Pine Springs Visitor Center up to one day before your trip.

About

Tejas Wilderness Campground offers a true backcountry experience in one of Texas's most remote wilderness areas. Located centrally within Guadalupe Mountains National Park, this primitive camping area features 5 designated campsites nestled among tall conifers that provide deep shade during morning and afternoon hours and protection from high winds. The extra hiking distance to reach Tejas is rewarded with a more densely forested environment compared to other backcountry sites in the park. The campground is accessible only by foot trail, requiring a 5.5-mile hike from Pine Springs Trailhead or 6.2-mile hike from Dog Canyon. This makes it ideal for experienced backpackers seeking solitude in a protected wilderness setting. All campsites are primitive with no amenities. Visitors must pack out all trash and are required to use landfill-safe commercial toilet bag systems for human waste disposal. Campfires are prohibited throughout the park, so bring a containerized fuel stove for cooking. Pets are not permitted on trails or in the backcountry. All overnight camping requires a Wilderness Use Permit, which includes a $6 reservation fee plus $6 per person per night. Permits can be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov or obtained at the Pine Springs Visitor Center up to one day before your trip. Proof of possession of one toilet bag per person per night is required when obtaining the permit.
