About
Shaw House is a historic stone masonry cabin nestled in the dramatic landscape of East Cochise Stronghold in the Dragoon Mountains of Coronado National Forest, once the refuge of Apache Chief Cochise. This substantial 8-room residence accommodates groups of up to 10 people and provides year-round lodging with climate control. The master bedroom features a queen-size bed, the second bedroom has two twin-over-double bunk beds, and the third bedroom contains a double futon. The living room includes two full-sized futons, and both bathrooms are equipped with showers, sinks, and toilets. The fully equipped kitchen includes stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, cookware, utensils, dishes, and coffeepot. The dining room seats six, and guests can enjoy outdoor dining using the propane grill and picnic table on the screened porch. Electricity and running water are provided. The cabin is located behind a locked gate accessed via combination lock, with keys provided in a lockbox upon reservation. The surrounding area offers spectacular recreation opportunities including world-class rock climbing on granite formations (routes ranging from 5.6 to 5.12), excellent hiking and mountain biking trails, and horseback riding. The rugged landscape features granite spires, balanced rocks, and seasonal streams, with abundant wildlife including white-tailed and mule deer, wild turkeys, black bear, bobcats, and mountain lions. The cabin is located approximately 10 miles west of Sunsites, Arizona, with nearby attractions including Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie National Historic Site.
Directions
From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit #318 (Dragoon Road). Turn right onto Dragoon Road and travel for approximately 10 miles to Cochise Stronghold Road. Turn right on Cochise Stronghold Road and travel for approximately 6 miles to Ironwood Road. The paved road dead ends at Ironwood Road. Turn right on Ironwood Road and travel for approximately 4 miles. Shaw House is the large rock house located off to the left of Ironwood Road behind a locked gate.
