About
Herb Martyr Campground is situated in the scenic Cave Creek Canyon within the Chiricahua Mountains of Coronado National Forest. This small, rustic campground accommodates tent camping only and provides access to some of the best birdwatching and hiking in southeastern Arizona. The Herb Martyr Trailhead, located within the campground, offers entry into the Chiricahua Wilderness, a hiker's paradise with trails leading through diverse terrain. The area is renowned for its wildlife viewing opportunities. Over 300 bird species have been documented in the Chiricahua Mountains, including magnificent hummingbirds, blue-throated hummingbirds, Montezuma quail, and the sought-after elegant trogon. Other wildlife frequently encountered includes Apache fox squirrels, coatimundis, and Coues white-tailed deer. The canyon's riparian forest and dramatic mountain scenery create an impressive backdrop for outdoor adventures. At 5,800 feet elevation, the campground offers comfortable temperatures and a sheltered setting along Cave Creek. High clearance vehicles are strongly recommended for accessing the campground, and four-wheel drive is beneficial. Campers should bring all necessary water as none is available on-site. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with payment accepted via cash or check.
