About
Sunny Flat Campground occupies a scenic stretch of Cave Creek Canyon in the Chiricahua Mountains, approximately 150 miles east of Tucson. Campsites cluster around a grassy meadow with varying levels of shade from mature sycamores and oaks. All sites sit reasonably close to Cave Creek, and the relatively open character provides exciting views of the canyon's famous rock formations towering overhead. The campground is a premier destination for birdwatchers. Elegant trogons and many other sought-after species are regularly sighted among the streamside vegetation. Beyond birding, visitors can explore the Vista Point Trail located a short distance downstream, or stop by the Cave Creek Visitor Information Center. This is a first-come, first-served campground with no reservations. Black bears inhabit the area, so proper food storage is essential. The campground will be evacuated if forecasts indicate rainfall of 1.5 inches or greater due to flood danger. Each site is limited to 2 vehicles and 10 persons, with a 14-day stay limit.
