Sunny Flat Campground sits in a relatively open meadow along Cave Creek in the Chiricahua Mountains, offering some of the best birding in Arizona. Elegant trogons and numerous other species are regularly spotted among the sycamores and oaks. All sites provide shade and proximity to Cave Creek, with dramatic views of the canyon's famous rock formations. The campground provides access to the Cave Creek Nature Trail, Vista Point Trail, and the Cave Creek Visitor Information Center downstream. The area is part of the Cave Creek Canyon/Portal to Paradise Loop scenic drive. Sites include picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and bear-proof lockers. The campground may be evacuated if rainfall forecasts exceed 1.5 inches due to flood danger. Trailers are limited to 28 feet, and the paved access road crosses Cave Creek via bridge. Black bears are present in the area. Pack and saddle stock are not permitted. Maximum stay is 14 days, with a limit of 2 vehicles and 10 persons per site.

Directions

From Portal, travel west on Forest Road 42 for approximately 3 miles to the campground. From Tucson, take I-10 east 139 miles to US 80, turn right and drive 28 miles, then turn right on Portal Road for 7 miles. All roads are paved.
