About
Selby Campground offers a secluded camping experience within the expansive Carrizo Plain National Monument, one of California's best-preserved native grassland ecosystems. The campground features 13 first-come, first-served campsites, each equipped with a covered picnic table, fire pit, and horse corrals for equestrian visitors. A wheelchair-accessible vault toilet serves the campground.
The campground is more remote than KCL Campground, requiring a 4.5-mile drive on Selby Road from Soda Lake Road, which tends to attract fewer RVs and offers a quieter, more isolated experience. The lack of amenities means campers must be self-sufficient, bringing all water and packing out all trash. The campground provides no electricity, potable water, or waste disposal services.
Selby's location directly adjacent to the Wilderness Study Area makes it ideal for hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking unlimited backcountry access. The remote setting offers exceptional dark sky viewing with minimal light pollution, making it a prime stargazing destination. The surrounding landscape showcases rolling hills and native grasslands, with spring wildflower displays drawing visitors from across the state. Road access can become impassable during wet conditions, so checking weather and road status before arrival is essential.
