About
KCL Campground sits within the Carrizo Plain National Monument, a remote 246,812-acre preserve known as California's Serengeti. The campground features 12 primitive campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis, with two elevated ADA-compliant sites. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit, and the campground is one of the few locations on the monument with established shade trees.
The campground retains its historic character from its days as Kern County Land Company property, with original barn structures and horse corrals still present. Horse camping is accommodated with corrals at the sites. An ADA-compliant vault toilet serves the campground, but there is no potable water, electricity, or garbage service. Campers must bring all necessary water and pack out all refuse.
The monument is famous for its spring wildflower superblooms when conditions are favorable, showcasing California's largest remaining native grassland. The remote location offers exceptional stargazing and wildlife viewing opportunities. Access is via Soda Lake Road, with the campground located a half-mile off the main road on KCL Campground Road.
