About
Salters Cabin Horse Camp sits in a quiet, second-growth ponderosa pine forest in the Ochoco National Forest, offering a serene escape for equestrian campers and nature enthusiasts. The campground features a large corral for horses, though there is no manure pit, so visitors must pack out waste and adhere to weed-free feed regulations to prevent the spread of invasive species. The site includes remnants of an old homestead and a historic cabin, which is maintained for historic purposes only and should not be entered or used for camping. The parking area is spacious enough to accommodate multiple vehicles and trailers, making it suitable for horse trailers and self-contained camping setups. There are no hookups, no water, and vault toilets are provided. The campground provides access to nearby trails including Baneberry Trail, a short interpretive trail about the area's mining history. Located just a few miles from the main highway and near Haystack Reservoir, Salters Cabin offers a tranquil base for exploring the surrounding Ochoco National Forest. The 14-day stay limit applies to all Forest Service land in the area.
