About

Mud Springs Horse Camp sits at the edge of Black Canyon Wilderness on Wolf Mountain's southeast flank, making it an ideal base for extended horseback trips through some of eastern Oregon's most scenic backcountry. The campground offers 6 campsites and 9 corrals, accommodating groups traveling with stock animals who may not all be camping overnight. Facilities are basic but functional: vault toilets and picnic tables at each site. There is no potable water, so campers must pack in all drinking water. The campground is free with no reservations required. Wilderness regulations limit trail groups to 12 heartbeats (people plus stock combined) at a time, though the campground itself has no such restriction. Access follows a series of increasingly remote forest roads from Paulina, Oregon: County Roads 113 and 135 to Forest Service Roads 58, 5840, and finally 800. The final approach is unpaved and may be rough in early season or after weather events.

Directions

From Paulina, Oregon: Continue east on Hwy 112 approximately 3.5 miles. Turn left onto County Road 113 and continue 1.5 miles. Turn right onto County Road 135 for approximately 9 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 58 for approximately 4 miles. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 5840 for approximately 7 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 800 to Mud Springs Horse Camp.
