Reva Gap Campground

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Forest Service maintains the campground mid-May through September. Limited to 14 consecutive nights.

About

Located in the isolated Slim Buttes Unit of the Custer Gallatin National Forest, Reva Gap Campground provides 8 primitive campsites adjacent to the Castles National Natural Landmark, a registered natural landmark featuring steep-walled, flat-topped buttes rising 200-400 feet above the rolling prairie. The campground is situated directly off Highway 20, approximately 20 miles from Buffalo, South Dakota, offering visitors a back-to-basics camping experience in one of the most remote corners of the state. This free campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit. Each campsite includes a picnic table and metal fire ring, with sites spread out to provide privacy. Vault toilets are available and ADA-accessible. Campers must bring their own water and pack out all trash, as no services are provided. The Forest Service maintains the campground from mid-May through the end of September, though the site remains accessible year-round. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the unique geological formations of the Slim Buttes area, with the Castles viewable from the south end of the campground. The area experiences light use, offering solitude and exceptional views of the surrounding grassland and buttes. Wildlife viewing and photography opportunities abound in this distinctive landscape.
