About
A small, get-away park, Llewellyn Johns' 10 campsites offer a quiet camping experience. Nearby Shadehill Recreation Area offers recreational opportunities as well as points of historical interest to keep you busy all day. Or, if you prefer peace and quiet, this is a great campground to just sit back and relax. Many historic figures have crossed through the area, including Hugh Glass and Custer's 1874 Expedition. In 1823, Glass was attacked by a grizzly bear in this area, which is documented in the novel "Lord Grizzly." For more historical information, tour the Petrified Wood Park and Museum and the Grand River Museum, which displays artifacts and photos of life on the ranch, Native American history and more. At Shadehill Recreation Area, a beach and boat ramp gives you access to one of western South Dakota's largest lakes, Campgrounds and camping cabins let you spend extra time to appreciate the outdoors. A mile from Llewellyn Johns Recreation Area is the Grand River National Grassland, part of the vast Dakota Prairie Grasslands. Visitors can fish, hike, ride horses and backpack.
