About
Penn Creek Campground sits within Sue-meg State Park, a one-square-mile coastal gem located 25 miles north of Eureka on California's rugged north coast. This intimate campground features 14 tent-only sites arranged in a single loop beneath a dense canopy of Sitka spruce and coastal vegetation. The campground's smaller size and forested setting create a quieter, more secluded atmosphere compared to the park's larger RV-accessible campgrounds. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire pit with grill, and food locker to protect against wildlife. The campground provides flush toilets and drinking water on-site, with shower facilities available at nearby Abalone Campground within walking distance. The forested sites offer privacy while still being close to the park's many attractions. Sue-meg State Park sits on a dramatic headland with high cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From the campground, visitors can easily access Agate Beach for tidepooling and agate hunting, explore miles of coastal and forest trails, visit the reconstructed Yurok plank-house village at Sumêg, and enjoy wildlife viewing opportunities. Gray whales migrate past the point during their annual journeys, while sea lions, harbor seals, and Roosevelt elk are commonly spotted year-round. The park's interior features a visitor center, native plant garden, and summer interpretive programs. With fog common throughout the year and most rainfall occurring October through April, the park offers a quintessential north coast California camping experience.
