About

Priest River Campground is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility on the Priest River, one mile east of the town of Priest River, Idaho. Known locally as "The Mudhole," the campground provides a shaded riverside setting beneath firs, cedars, and pines. The 20 campsites are standard nonelectric with picnic tables and fire rings. Water recreation dominates here: kayaking, swimming, and fishing are all popular. The day-use area features a swim beach, boat ramp, picnic shelter, playground, softball field, and large grassy areas. The adjacent Priest River Wildlife Area offers excellent birding, with bald eagles, osprey, and deer commonly spotted. Albeni Falls Dam, built in 1955 for flood control and power production, created Lake Pend Oreille—one of the largest and deepest natural lakes in the western United States, reaching depths over 1,200 feet. The Albeni Falls Visitor Center provides exhibits and summer dam tours.
