Camping limited to 14 total days per campground between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Note: Ironman Michigan triathlon on September 20, 2026 will close M-22 from 8:30 AM to approximately 2 PM between Frankfort and Esch Road.

The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place **Sunday, September 20, 2026.** The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road. * **To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.** * **To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.**

Platte River Campground lies in a wooded area of maple and beech forests in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Michigan's lower peninsula. The campground offers diverse camping options including back-in and pull-through sites with electric hookups in Loops 1-3, non-electric sites in Loop 4, walk-in tent-only sites, and hike-in group sites accommodating up to 25 people. Each site features a paved parking pad, established tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring. The location provides excellent access to recreation. The Platte River is within walking distance for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, with canoe rentals available at Platte River Point where the river meets Lake Michigan. The Platte Plains trail system offers over 25 miles of hiking trails accessible from the campground area. Lake Michigan beaches are less than two miles away. Facilities include flush toilets and hot showers in each loop, potable water spigots throughout, and an RV dump station at the entrance. Firewood is sold between Loops 2 and 3. Reservations are required May 1 through October 31 via Recreation.gov and can be made up to six months in advance. Winter camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

From Traverse City: Take M-72 west to Empire, turn south on M-22, proceed 10 miles and turn right on Lake Michigan Road. Follow signs to campground. From US-31/M-115: Continue north 7 miles from the junction, turn left on Platte Road, proceed 5 miles, turn right on M-22, proceed 1 mile, turn left on Lake Michigan Road.
