Open

Weather Station Campground individual sites are open for the 2026 season, but access is severely limited due to major dock construction. The Manitou Island Transit Ferry is not operating in 2026 due to unsafe docking conditions. Visitors must arrange private boat transportation or charter through Manitou Passage LLC. The dock, village, lighthouse, Bay Campground, and all group campsites remain closed. All potable water sources on the island are unavailable. Only pit toilets at Weather Station and Popple campgrounds are open. Full facilities expected to reopen in 2027.

Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 11:08AM EDT by NWS Gaylord MI

11:08 AM — 8:00 PM

The combination of dry surface conditions, low afternoon relative humidity values, and gusty east to southeast winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan this. Sustained winds of 7 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be seen over northern Michigan this afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 35 percent are expected over much of northern lower Michigan. These conditions could lead to rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning. For more information on burning restrictions for Michigan, see www.dnr.state.mi.us//.

About

Weather Station Campground occupies a scenic location on the southern bluffs of South Manitou Island within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The campground is reached via a 1.3-mile wooded trail past the island's historic lighthouse. The 20 individual campsites are well secluded from each other in a forested setting, each accommodating up to 4 people or 2 tents. Three group sites can host 7-20 campers. This is true backcountry camping. There is no potable water on the island, so campers must bring water filtration equipment or pack in at least 2 liters per person. Vault toilets are the only facilities available. A communal metal fire ring provides the only sanctioned location for campfires, using down and dead wood only. Firewood cannot be transported to the island. South Manitou Island offers exceptional hiking opportunities including the Giant Cedars grove, Lake Florence, the shipwreck Morazan, and panoramic views of Manitou Passage. Emergency response can take hours to days depending on weather, so campers should be self-sufficient and prepared for wilderness conditions.
