Pinyon Flat Campground offers 18 first-come, first-served campsites nestled within the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument at 4,000 feet elevation. Surrounded by a peaceful desert landscape with the nearby Santa Rosa Wilderness Area, this campground attracts hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking solitude in a rugged environment. The Pinyon Trail 5E03 begins on the western edge of the campground, providing direct access to wilderness exploration. The campground is particularly popular during spring when the desert comes alive with colorful wildflowers. With no potable water or restrooms on site, campers must come fully self-sufficient. Despite the primitive nature of the facilities, the campground is lightly used and rarely fills up, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a quieter camping experience away from crowded developed campgrounds. Campfires including wood and charcoal fires are currently prohibited by Forest Order, though campers may use propane or similar fueled cook stoves with an on/off valve. Sites cost $8 per night and include one vehicle, with an additional $5 fee for each extra vehicle. Payment can be made on-site using the Recreation.gov mobile app's Scan and Pay feature where available.

Pinyon Flat Campground is located off Highway 74 in Mountain Center, California, in the San Bernardino National Forest. From Palm Springs, drive southwest for about 29 miles on Highway 74. Look for signs to the campground around Pinyon Drive; access is straightforward and the route is paved and scenic.
