About

Pine Mountain Campground occupies a scenic high-desert summit in the Deschutes National Forest, directly across from the University of Oregon's Pine Mountain Observatory. At roughly 6,300 feet elevation, this primitive campground offers exceptional dark-sky conditions that draw stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings from May through September when the observatory hosts public viewing sessions. The campground provides 14 sites total: four drive-in sites that accommodate trailers up to 27 feet in length, plus ten tent camping sites accessible by foot. Camping is completely free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Facilities are intentionally minimal, with just one vault toilet available. There is no potable water, no trash service, and no hookups of any kind. Campers must bring all water needed for drinking and fire suppression, and must pack out all trash. The area is typically snowed in from December through May, with the campground opening as soon as road conditions allow and remaining open through late September. The nearest services including gas, food, and lodging are in Bend, approximately one hour's drive away. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Directions

From Bend, travel about 20 miles east on US 20, then 8 miles south on Forest Road 2017.
