About

Pine Mountain Campground occupies a remote location at approximately 6,300 feet elevation on the summit of Pine Mountain in the Deschutes National Forest's Fort Rock Area. The campground is situated near the Pine Mountain Observatory, offering visitors a unique high-desert camping experience with expansive views and access to one of the region's premier stargazing locations. This is a no-fee campground that operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The facility provides basic amenities suitable for self-sufficient campers, including vault toilets but no potable water, so visitors must bring all the water they'll need. The campground can accommodate RVs and trailers, with site spurs up to 40 feet in length, though the remote forest road access requires careful navigation. Access to Pine Mountain Campground requires traveling approximately 20 miles east of Bend on US Highway 20, then turning south onto Forest Road 2017 for 8 miles. The road and campground are subject to seasonal closures, typically from late September through late spring or early summer, depending on snow conditions. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The high-elevation setting and proximity to the observatory make this an ideal basecamp for astronomy enthusiasts and those seeking solitude in the Deschutes National Forest.

Directions

From Bend, travel about 20 miles east on US Highway 20, then turn south onto Forest Road 2017 and continue for 8 miles to reach the campground on the summit of Pine Mountain.
