About

Located on the south shore of Paulina Lake within Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the Odd Fellows Cabins are a collection of four historic structures built between 1934 and 1938 by the Bend chapter of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Constructed primarily of native lava rock and pine timber, these cabins exemplify the folk architecture of Depression-era buildings in the forested Pacific Northwest. The cabins were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. After standing largely unused for decades, the cabins have undergone restoration work through partnerships between the Forest Service, Deschutes Historical Society, and volunteer organizations like HistoriCorps and Passport in Time. The restored cabins are situated at the Newberry Group Camp Site and serve as an interpretive area showcasing the history of the Odd Fellows and early recreational use of Paulina Lake. This is a day-use interpretive site rather than an overnight camping facility. Access is via Paulina Lake Road, which closes seasonally from mid-November through mid-May due to snow accumulation.

Directions

From Bend, Oregon, drive south on U.S. Highway 97 for approximately 23 miles to La Pine. From La Pine, take Paulina Lake Road (Forest Road 21) east for about 15 miles to reach Paulina Lake. The Odd Fellows Cabins are located on the south shore of Paulina Lake within the Deschutes National Forest.
